What Happens at a Memorial Service in Melbourne?

August 27, 2026
Charis' Blog  ·  Funeral Resources

Families often ask what happens at a memorial service, especially when they want time to plan a gathering after a private funeral or cremation. A memorial service brings people together to remember someone who has died, share stories and acknowledge the place that person holds in their lives.

How is a memorial service different from a funeral?

A funeral commonly takes place soon after a death and may include the coffin. A memorial service can be held days, weeks or months later and the coffin is usually not present. Some families display an urn, while others focus on photographs, flowers and meaningful objects.

There is no legal requirement for a memorial service to follow a particular format. This gives families time and freedom to choose a venue, date and style that feel right.

Where can a memorial service be held?

Memorial services in Melbourne take place in chapels, gardens, community halls, function venues, family homes and places that mattered to the person. A favourite restaurant, sporting club or coastal location may feel more personal than a traditional chapel.

Consider access, seating, sound, weather and privacy when selecting the location. If the gathering is outdoors, a clear backup plan is important.

What is included in a memorial service?

A memorial service may include a welcome, an account of the person’s life, a eulogy, music, readings, photographs, family contributions and a final farewell. There may also be candle lighting, the sharing of food or another ritual connected to the person’s culture and values.

Every element is optional. The ceremony should reflect the person and the needs of those attending, not a fixed template.

Who leads the service?

A funeral celebrant can meet with the family, write the ceremony and guide the gathering. A family member or friend may also lead, although many families value having an experienced person manage the timing and emotional flow.

The celebrant introduces speakers, provides reassurance and adapts if emotions or unexpected moments change the plan.

Can several people speak?

Yes. A memorial held some time after the death can offer more opportunity for family members and friends to prepare stories. Several short contributions often create a rich and varied picture of the person.

Ask each speaker to focus on a particular part of the person’s life. This reduces repetition and helps the service move naturally.

How long does a memorial service last?

Many memorial services last between thirty and sixty minutes. A gathering with many speakers, live music or cultural rituals may be longer. The formal ceremony can also be followed by refreshments and informal conversation.

What should guests wear?

Families can choose traditional funeral clothing or invite guests to wear colour, relaxed clothing or something connected to the person. Make the request clear in the invitation so guests feel comfortable.

Can children attend?

Children can attend when families feel it is appropriate. Explain what they will see and hear, allow them to ask questions and make it easy for an adult to step outside with them if needed. Children may contribute a drawing, flower or short memory.

How do you make the service personal?

Personal details create connection. Display photographs from different stages of life. Play music the person genuinely enjoyed. Include favourite sayings, familiar stories, recipes, hobbies or objects that guests will recognise.

A meaningful ceremony does not need to be elaborate. It needs to feel honest.

Planning a Melbourne memorial service

A memorial service offers time to gather a wider community and create a farewell without the pressure of immediate funeral arrangements. It can be reflective, warm, informal or celebratory while still making space for grief.
